Supplements for the Skin: Is It Worth It?
There are many types of supplements out there: from kinds that promise hair growth, increased nail strength, and of course, supplements that promote brighter and healthier skin. Today we at FaceTory want to ask if buying skincare supplements is actually worth it.
Understanding Probiotics and Prebiotics
Many skincare supplements say they’re filled with probiotics and prebiotics, but what does it mean? Probiotics and prebiotics have different roles in our general health. Probiotics are living (or “active”) with “good” bacteria for our guts and our microbiomes. Prebiotics, on the other hand, are made from plants to help the probiotics along, giving them the energy they need.
Finding Skin Barrier Solutions
Both probiotics and prebiotics can be used in skincare supplements to help strengthen sensitive skin and defend the skin barrier against skin conditions like acne and eczema. Probiotic supplements in skincare can also help repair sun-damaged skin and prevent other future skin conditions. Not all skincare products are created equal: consult your doctor if you have any questions or if you’re curious!
What About Fermented Supplements?
At FaceTory, we’ve been learning recently all about how fermented ingredients in skincare can help our microbiomes – often by breaking ingredients down enough to make it easier for them to penetrate our skin. Fermented ingredients also can help smooth our skin texture and keep our skin looking and feeling moisturized.Skincare supplements can have many benefits, but we always want to try to make sure we’re taking a holistic approach when it comes to our bodies. For example, it is possible to have too much of a good thing – like too much of one particular vitamin and a deficiency in another.
Ultimately, when it comes to understanding your own physical health, we recommend consulting your doctor to make sure that any supplements you use are a good choice for you.
