How to Layer Your Serums
One of the best (or overwhelming) parts of discovering your love for skincare is finding the vast amount of serums available in the market! You can feel like a kid in a candy store just walking down the skincare aisle and seeing the displays of different serums, all promising to fix your skin woes. Then you *add to cart, add to cart, add to cart~ (no? Just us???)
Okay, so say you now have a collection of serums, how do you effectively use them all? We’ve got the answer! Read more below~
Why You Should Layer Serums
Sometimes just having one serum isn’t enough, especially as everyone faces different skin concerns. Plus, your skin concerns can also change with different seasons. In case you’re new to the game, layering serums is great as you can target more than one skin concern at a time. Serums are also packed with concentrated ingredients that help target skin concerns, making it more effective! But you want to make sure you’re doing it right, and not overwhelming your skin.
How To Layer Serums
- Think consistency
The rule of thumb is to always apply thinnest to thickest when it comes to consistency. Some serums are more watery than others and these are the ones you’ll want to apply first. If you apply a thin serum after a thicker serum, it will be harder for ingredients to penetrate the skin.
- Think concerns and Ingredients
Besides consistency, keeping in mind the active ingredient inside the serum is important to know which one you’ll apply first. For example, if you have acne and dry skin, you can treat both by applying an acne-fighting serum, like our Leaf Drops, first and then follow it up with a Hyaluronic serum like our Sky Drops. Leaf Drops will treat the acne and Sky Drops will soothe the skin right after and lock moisture in place. With this practice, you’ll get optimal benefits from your serums!
What NOT to Layer
Before you go ham and apply all of your serums at once, there’s two things to keep in mind:
Be mindful of how many serums you are applying
There’s no specific number but most people will stop at 3. If you have multiple skin concerns to fix, having designated days to use serums is a great way to treat your skin problems without overwhelming it.
Check the ingredients before layering
Speaking of overwhelming, there are certain ingredients that should never be mixed on your face as it could damage your skin or cancel each other out. For example, Retinol with any exfoliating ingredients like AHA or BHA is a no-go as it could cause dryness and irritation. It’s good to have one active ingredient and one soothing ingredient for serums that you’re layering so you don’t compromise your skin.
Should you be layering serums everyday?
Not necessarily. You want to make sure you always listen to your skin before applying skincare. Sometimes your skin might not need all that! You also have the option to choose certain serums for daytime or nighttime! The possibilities with serums are endless! :D ! Just listen to your skin and have fun with it!
Thanks so much for reading and don’t forget to just keep glowing!
