The Secret to Getting Rid of Dandruff
Dandruff knows no limits, it appears on everyone's scalp at one point or another, regardless of who you are! It’s a struggle to get rid of, especially when you’re not sure what to do. Down below, we’ve curated a list of tips on how to help eliminate dandruff so you can feel your best!
What IS Dandruff?
Dandruff is, to put it simply, a yeast that grows everywhere (don’t worry it’s natural!). Its scientific name is Malassezia and it lives mostly on our skin. However, when there is an overproduction of this fungus, skin shedding happens at an even faster rate! This causes us to see the white flakes we associate with dandruff.
What causes Dandruff?
Malassezia is a yeast that lives and thrives in the oil deposits on our scalps! The warmth and moisture coming from our scalp allows them to grow which then sets off an alarm on our scalp, telling us that our scalp is itchy! This is why, when you experience dandruff, your scalp is a lot more sensitive.
How to Treat Dandruff?
Buying an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo can simply do the trick! However, there are various other steps and products that you should consider taking in order to truly keep dandruff at bay!
Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid has been proven multiple times before on its effectiveness towards dandruff. Just a precaution though, shampoos that contain salicylic acid can be very drying so be sure to follow up with a heavy conditioner or a hair mask afterward!
Hair and Scalp Masks
Production of dandruff can be worsened if your scalp becomes too dry! So be sure to keep that beautiful head of yours locked and loaded with moisture!
Scalp Exfoliation
Yes, your scalp needs occasional exfoliating just like your skin does. Exfoliating your scalp will gently lift the dry layer of skin and will help remove any dead skin, causing dandruff to dissolve. Exfoliation can be very drying so similar to skin care, we recommend only exfoliating once or twice a week.
Just remember that everyone experiences dandruff here and there and that it’s just a natural occurrence! But we hope with these tips, you can find the first step you need to take into alleviating your scalp from dandruff!
