Are you still using physical exfoliants as the only way of sloughing off dead skin cells? Then you’ll want to stick around and learn more about chemical exfoliators A.K.A the real game-changers of skincare!
Many physical and chemical exfoliators have the same goal in mind: to remove dead skin cells that sit at the top layer of the skin and making way for a brighter, smoother, and a more even complexion!
Here’s a guide to exfoliators if you’re curious about learning more!
Today, we’re talking about AHA and BHA, the most common chemical exfoliators. They are super popular and worth all the hype! It can get a little confusing trying to keep up with the difference so we’re going to break it down to the basics!
Let’s start with AHAs:
- AHA means Alpha Hydroxy Acid
A good option for dry, aging, and sun-damaged skin
Look for: Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic Acid, Citric Acid
AHAs are a lot more gentle on the skin since they focus on the top layer of the epidermis (outermost layer). This type of chemical exfoliant can help remove dead skin cells that sit on the top layer of the skin, improving tone and texture.
Now for BHAs:
- BHA are also known as Beta Hydroxy Acids
A good option for oily/acne-prone skin
Look for: Salicylic Acid
BHAs are also gentle for most skin types and have the same function as AHAs. The main difference is that it can penetrate through oils and clear out clogged pores! So it works a little deeper than AHA would. Because of this, it’s more suited for oily skin types that tend to produce more oil. It will also help speed the skin’s healing process, healing breakouts/ pimples.
